Penicillin? I thought that was Louis Pasteur. The Curies did foundational
work in radiology, specifically working with x-rays. Marie Curie died of
radiation poison, because it was not known back then that x-rays could be
deadly.
I often had the impression she was remembered more for her supreme
sacrfice than for her pioneering work. Thus she could be admired without
too much "unpleasant" referrence to her intellect.
