May I just add my opinion on what you said at the end:

I partially agree with your friends, except that -- after the fad
has died down -- the Internet (especially the World Wide Web) will
best survive and develop as a vehicle of educational development
(much more than it is now), along with its usefulness in professional
connectivity. It might add a new dimension to urban life, but I
suspect it won't dominate it. At present, I believe people will
soon grow weary of the WWW as another exhausting channel of
advertisement -- no different than the annoying intrusiveness of ads
we see in the multitude of magazines on newsstands. After the "get
rich quick" attitude toward the WWW dies down, maybe it will have
a better chance at maturing more normally as a tool like the radio
or telephone. I especially see that the Internet has increased
the usage of the English language as the new *lingua franca* of
cyberspace, and that development has been a great way to build a
sense of *international community* -- even as we now see within
the SURVPC list. This international community, I believe, will
be the Internet's greatest mark on the world in years to come.
