The first (and most expensive) computer I had personal
control of was a Morrow MD3 computer running CP/M 3.0. The
"feature" was that that version allowed use of 128K of mem-
ory if the software could do the page-swapping. The PC had
a 5Mb HDD and two 360K floppies. I think it had a modem,
but I don't recall details. The bundled word processor was
called NewWord and was a very good clone of WordStar. In
fact, it had some feature that caused the publisher of Word-
Star to buy NewWord! Much of the "utility" software I used
was Public Domain and was quite good. CP/M had a "catch-
all" command called PIP that, like the Messy-DOS "mode" com-
mand, did a number of various things. A number of the PD
programs were crude "shells" that permitted various file
manipulations without worrying about the command details.
I don't know any source of "how-to" information for
CP/M, but there are a number of CP/M emulators on simtelnet
in the "pub/simtelnet/msdos/emulate" subdirectory. One
that I tried was ZSIM (zsim241.zip). It made even the
once-speedy Z80 seem fairly sickly!
