Dear List Guys/Gals,

To you, some of my favorite correspondents:

Happy New *.*!

Now that we've had a year to get over all the hype, we find
ourselves at the ACTUAL end of: the year, the century, the
millennium.

Marketing blather aside, this is where it really changes.

Last year was just a "years digit rollover" boundary.

It was only significant because:
1) it was a big round number,
2) a certain amount of software would break because of
short-sighted or sloppy practices, and this:
3) provided the media with an excuse to scare people,
4) provided governments with an excuse to spend obscene
amounts of money to "save us all" from the "global
   computer disaster,"
5) gave marketing people a plausible reason to push a bunch
   of new hardware (and movies).

For me it has been a year of big changes: lost my job,
nearly lost the house, had to move, got a new job which
fell through, and finally got a job with some stability.
Very thrilling, near-heart-attack kind of stuff. And the
result? I'm now living in a nicer town with nicer people
with more opportunity -- and I'm making 30% more than I was.

And, in spite of having my life turned upside down, I still
have you guys: people I've never met, but for whom I have
the greatest respect.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate having you there.

Best Regards,
Garry
