I'm a big Debian fan, but more from the perspective of stability and
integrity. Performance-wise, there are others (i.e. Turbo) that purport to
be more speed-inclined. I like Debian because it'll also run on the SurvPC
(386/8-16) level hardware as well as the big dogs and it allow a high degree
of control over EXACTLY what gets installed. I can do the tweaking myself.
They've all got strengths though. I'd suggest Debian for your SECOND
install. Play around with an easier to run one, and learn what you do and
don't like. Then be patient enough to get Debian running, and compare.

I was never a Mandrake fan, and actually preferred RedHat. They both are
bloat-ish though, but they do offer a LOT of neat stuff. Again, Debian can
do all those things while not overloading my disk with un-used stuff. The
stuff of Holy Wars to be sure though!
Minix and BeOS are other critters altogether. Minix runs on lower end
hardware, but I can't say that I have first-hand experience running it.
The good news is that most are readily available these days.
