The SMPS first rectifies input AC into DC. This is then fed to
an
oscillator at a much higher frequency than the standard 60hz AC.
As the freq goes up, the number of turns in a xfmr goes down.
by
running at 20k-200k, they can use, say, only 8 turns of 14awg
wire
to deliver the high amperage needed for penitum cpus. It also
cuts
down dramatically on the required size of output filter caps.
