Some can, depending on the specific driver. I've even seen them referred to
as "LinModems". I managed to get one working on a Toshiba laptop (Tecra
8100) with a bit of fussing.
The only bummer is that it's still going to be a CPU hog even if it does
work, but that sure beats nothing.
