Subject: [pctoolbin] Re: WinXP etc.
I wondering how copies can be burned and distributed of WinXP with the
new Activation requirements? I've been testing since Beta 1, 2, and now
RC1 and all require activation. After you install once, every install
after that bombs internet activation and requires a call to MS to
activate. (they ask you a bunch of questions regarding why they see
you've already installed it once.) Believe me I've been through at least
a dozen times between WinXP and the OfficeXP copy I received from MS. (I
might note I have been and am currently using Linux Mandrake 8.0 and
StarOffice 5.2 with much enjoyment and non-harassment)
BTW, WinXP looks like a great product outside of it's activation scheme.
They've bundled so much stuff with this OS, it seems like they're
laughing and dancing in the face of Judge Jackson. Office XP is nice,
but if you have Office2k, don't bother upgrading for the price. Office97
or earlier users might yield some profitability. Both are a super hassle
after each reinstall. (they do still allow one install for a personal
desktop and one for your personal laptop) I've been a die-hard fan of
Win2k and make a living off of it, this raises the bar even higher from
what I've seen so far. I would heartily recommend the upgrade (clean
install!) to anyone using any of the Win9x/Me crashes if your hardware
can handle it. If not, this year would be a good year to buy a new
system! (No, I'm not selling any!)
All that said,
I'm still a Linux and StarOffice 5.2 user at home though. Kinda grows on
you, is free, and does nearly everything I could ask it to.
OpenOffice/StarOffice 6.0 promises an even better product, though sadly,
without the scheduling and email/newsgroup features which I use
abundantly.
