Hello:

I have seen this same topic of how to get DOS to deal with long
filenames discussed frequently on several mailing lists of
interest to DOS users.

I wish to ask why DOS users should even care to bother with all
the hassle of trying to get DOS to recognize long filenames.
Why not just rename the long filenames to something legal, or why
not just accept the default Windows naming conventions which makes
use of the tildes and numbers as substitutes and aliases for the
the missing parts of the original long filenames names? If for
any reason you really need to know the original long filenames
names, then you could easily use a simple DOS utility such as
DIRNOTES.COM to produce a directory listing providing both the legal
filenames and also the long filenames names. That is the simple
solution I resort to. All the other solutions I have seen posted
seem to involve having to suffer with big rigmaroles and hassles.
Some proposals involve DOS version switching and installing special
drivers. It is enough to wake you up screaming from configuration
nightmares. Why not just keep it simple and use something like
DIRNOTES.COM?

My own copy of DIRNOTES.COM is just a 1,704 byte file dated 5-19-87.
I think it is freeware. I don't know where you can download it from.
If anyone knows, please post. If you want a copy just ask me for it
by private email.
