Java applets are small programs that run "inside" the webbrowser (well, the
JVM is not inside the browsers as much as it used to). They can also be run
inside the appletviewer.

Oh, because these are files containing a virus in some other language such
as C, C++, Delphi (got one today made in Delphi), VisualBasic etc. Most
popular is however the macro/script languages (probably because they are so
easy to learn).

That's another problem entirely. And you can't as a programmer determine
when memory is low or what is saved on disk and where this is saved. No
need to be afraid for anyone taking advantage of that, it's impossible.
