You do not need a shell account, thankfully, to use a dos-based (for
example) offline mail reader. All you need is a separate piece of
software that transfers mail to and from your pop3/smtp or imap
mail server. I use fdsmtp and love it. It tells me, item by item
on the screen which messages actually get received or sent and what
problems if any occurred.

Once you download the files to, say dos or linux, you can run a virus
scanner on them if you like before even reading the files.

I use a combination of yarn and readmail as my offline mail readers and
mail senders. Works great.

There is also a couple of versions of Pine for dos that will send/receive
mail from pop3/smtp or imap servers. They are probably more safe then
windows software also, in terms of viruses, etc.
