Originally, Geocities.com was arranged as named "communities" with a
common interest. (My military/veteran site is on
http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/3227) When they sold out to Yahoo
a few years ago, Yahoo didn't maintain the "community" aspect of the
freebie websites. The old geocities URLs still work (and you'll find
that the numbered sites still do share commonality of content) - but
the sometimes-lengthy URLs of "popular" geocities communities are no
longer necessary under yahoo's management: all you need today is
geocities.com/username.

Note: FortuneCity.com websites (an early copycat of geocities'
winning format) still follow the "community" style of URL assignment.
