Hey, people. Say, I don't want to spend a lot of bandwidth with this, since
it's slightly off topic, but I've created a new application which I'm
planning to release as shareware in the coming days. My problem is, that
I've come up with a name for it, and I need to find out first if that name
has been used already. The worst thing is to release a program, and then 6
months or a year later, some company writes you and says they've trademarked
that name, and that they want you to quit using it.
I really don't have the wherewithall to apply for a trademark, so I'm trying
to avoid that.
I know that most programmers get around this by basically coming up with a
name that they're sure nobody else would use, but in this case, the
particular name I've chosen is one that any number of other programmers
might choose, and I wanted to check first.
I haven't released shareware since the early 90's, when I was a member of
the Association of Shareware Professionals, so I had them as a resource for
this task, but I don't belong there anymore. What with my day job, and all,
I don't even know much about the current hot file repositories. Back when,
I just released new programs to Simtel and that one in Finland, and the
programs found their way to many other servers around the world.
Should I just check the major search engines? So far, this name hasn't come
up. I've also searched CNet and Ziff-Davis in their sections devoted
especially to the type of application this is.
is this enuf? Anyone have any other thoughts? I know that this list has a
few other programmers, and I know that not everyone is interested in this
type of thing, but a few might be, so it's probably best to write me off
list.
Actually, if anyone knows how to look up trademarked names, I'd appreciate
that, too.
Thanks in advance.
