Karen, Basic speed things on a pentium machine include making sure that L1 and L2 cache are turned on (you can't do that with screen reading software because it's in the CMOS setup, before the first boot screen ever appears).
Also, you can never have too much RAM (well, DOS won't use it all), and while 48MB may be adequate, I suggest going to 64MB (which will support any bad habit you develop). Another thing is making sure that you have your settings in config.sys and autoexec.bat right. Here are the lines from my p-120 machine (running win 98 and runs fast enough): ---------- DOS=High,UMB Files=99 FCBs=9,128 Buffers=33 Stacks=9,128 Shell=C:\Command.com /E:512 /P DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\Emm386.exe NoEms DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SETVER.EXE ---------- The "/TestMem:OFF" clause in the HiMem.sys line speeds up the HiMem load time. Notice the "NoEms" clause on the emm386 line -- this frees up the EMS base page. If you don't do this, you lose some valuable low memory. I don't enable EMS unless I *know* I have to have it for some application. Also notice that the "Files=" and "Buffers=" values are both odd numbers. This is a remedy for a bug that has been with MS-DOS on and off since version 3.2 -- under certain conditions, using even numbers will cause 64k of memory to mysteriously disappear. The "DOS=High,UMB" statement moves a number of DOS things out of low memory. The "Shell=" statement grants my command.com additional environment variable space. As for the stuff in my autoexec.bat: ---------- @echo off LH C:\Windows\Command\DosKey /Insert Path C:\Utl;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;c:\dos Set Temp=C:\Temp Prompt $p$g ---------- The only significant thing here is the use of LH (LoadHigh) for anything I load as a TSR. Running smartdrv is a case-by-case thing. I've usually used it, but under certain circumstances it slows things down. Hope this helps, ~~Garry [EMAIL PROTECTED] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen D.
