James,

My first instinct says "check the cable."  Make sure
it's not upside down, make sure it's centered on the
connector.  Make sure it's not loose at either drive.

Check power to the floppies.  Make sure the connector
is on and seated at both drives.

My next check would be jumpers on the floppy unit
that set it for something other than 1st drive.

Which drive is supposed to be A: in this system?
