Hi Gang!
I've been following the discussion about Opera and USNET, newsgroups,
whatever you want to call them. The lack of NNTP support in Opera, or ANY
BROWSER for that matter, doesn't bother me in the least. In fact, one of
my chief complaints with IE was it TRIED to be a newsgroup client! Then of
course LookOut Express does the same now. I much prefer my browser stick
to web browsing, and I use a dedicated newsgroup client for NNTP...
depending on which OS I'm booted into at the time determines which I use.
My taste is my own however, but for anyone who has tried to program a
browser to include NNTP, you would know how difficult it is. I've tried
it, by putting bits and pieces of the old DosLynx together, til I finally
gave up and decided to keep the browser seperate. Opera 3.62 is the latest
version I have, for Windows 3.1, so I can't speak for later versions.
There is an option in the Menu Bar to have Opera attempt to read
newsgroups. But, since I use WinVN in Win95 and NX in Win31, I never tried
the NNTP functions. In DOS, I prefer to use the commandline tools GETNEWS
and POSTNEWS...this offers me maximum flexibility when dealing with the
sometimes inordinate amount of cross-posted garbage. Opera 3.62 has been a
very decent web browser for my use, on an 8 meg RAM Pentium 75 it runs
almost twice as fast as IE 3.03. Maybe I should try the NNTP function and
report back? If interested, let me know. The other thing about newsgroups
that has been mentioned is the fact that few new users know about them. It
seems to be something they stumble across. Myself, I am currently only
left on 1 NNTP newsgroup. Everything else has migrated to HTTP.
Well, guess that's about all...C U L8R!
