Linux or BSD do provide single user mode, but it's not meant for running
apps and general purpose tasks. Guess what? It's NOT DOS. It's not SUPPOSED
TO BE LIKE DOS. It is an ALTERNATIVE TO (and thus "different" by definition
than) DOS! And guess what else? Not every blasted board you drag out of your
closet is guaranteed to work! Who said it would?

Gang, I think it's time we all just give up on trying to teach Day new
tricks. If it doesn't act just like DOS, he's not interested. The books are
either too thick or too thin, or it's too technical or too dumbed down. He
knows DOS, he only likes DOS, he should just stick to DOS and quit making
his own shortcomings out to be some limitation of Linux, BSD or any other
OS. In every case, the limitations he has cited have either been due to his
lack of understanding, or unwillingness to do things even a little bit
differently than he has in the past. And the concept of using SUPPORTED
hardware seems to be beyond what he's willing to stoop to.

If you want the install to be painless and simple (aka "dumbed down"), use a
suitable distribution (i.e. RedHat or Mandrake) ON SUPPORTED HARDWARE. If
you want fine control and the ability to know exactly what goes on your
system (aka. "too technical"), use Debian or Slackware, and BE PREPARED TO
SPEND SOME TIME GETTING SPECIFIC HARDWARE TO WORK. And for God's sake, don't
try to tell us the booskstores aren't stocked with titles like "Linux for
Dummies". Quit being so damned cheap and either buy some, or take a bit of
time to read on the web before spouting more incorrect information.

If ever single alternative OS and distribution is "too complex", the
constant in the equation is the user.
