Probably. A unix mailbox or folder is more or less a plain text
file where each message begins with "From ....." (not From: ...).

While I don't see the point in converting them to SOUP, if you
really want to use a SOUP reader, one way to convert them is to
split them into individual messages and use the above-mentioned
x_spool utility.

I don't know if ztelnet is included with any distribution. However,
the tarball contains a pre-compiled binary that should run on any
version of Linux, if you can't compile it. The binary works with
Debian (Woody), but I didn't try it on BasicLinux.

Ztelnet is a telnet client with internal zmodem. External file transfer
protocols can also be used, but I have no idea if they would work with
a BBS.

Minicom is a terminal program (Telix clone).
