BasicLinux comes with a 2.0.34 kernel; but, it should work with other kernels too. I have tried it briefly with a 2.2.19 kernel (from Slackware 8) and it worked fine. However, the 2.2.19 kernel is nearly twice the size of 2.0.34, and it would be unsuitable for a system with just 8meg RAM. > I have a patch file for kernel version 2.2.16-22 I think > loadlin and the kernel will find called vmlinuz.spk. > By adding that file to the directory basic linux makes it > might be possible to get it talking on a doubletalk lt > synthesizer using the speakup screen reader. Do you have this equipment yourself? If so, have tried any version of Linux with this patch? I think a doubletalk/speakup-capable kernel should work with BasicLinux. I would like to follow this up.
