BasicLinux comes with a 2.0.34 kernel; but, it should work
with other kernels too. I have tried it briefly with a
2.2.19 kernel (from Slackware 8) and it worked fine. However,
the 2.2.19 kernel is nearly twice the size of 2.0.34, and it
would be unsuitable for a system with just 8meg RAM.

Do you have this equipment yourself? If so, have tried any
version of Linux with this patch?

I think a doubletalk/speakup-capable kernel should work with
BasicLinux. I would like to follow this up.
