I think the problem is that gnumeric's "part of the GNOME desktop
environment." While it's unfortunate that this excludes many, I think the
GNOME team is trying to develop a free desktop alternative without the vast
resources of a commercial user base that pays annual homage, er upgrade
fees. I suspect they're choosing their battles wisely, and are fighting on
the GUI desktop front for now.

Hopefully, when GNOME and other efforts see widespread success, they can
turn their efforts to issues such as this. I certainly don't envy anybody
that's on Microsoft's bad side right now. I know the open source community
is sensitive to issues such as access and low-resource use/reuse more than
any other software collective.
