See my comments on LSPPP and the dreaded ``Authenticating' below.
For the many experiencing connection problem with their 1/2 modems,
1/4 modems, PCI maybe modems, android modems -- half hardware, half
hardware of your PC, half software, drivers, etc. etc.:
I recently became the proud owner of a genuine external hardware Zoom,
56K ``dualmode'' modem, by successfully upgrading the flash rom in this
thing, which I bought for a couple of dollars at a flea market.
I initially experienced verious connection problems and error messages,
until I noticed how long the zoom modem took to negotiate with its
corresponding server modem. I simply adjusted the timeout to a minute
(yes 60 seconds) in my trusty chat script, and virtually all my problems
went away.
You might try a big timeout to see if this helps with some of your problems.
In this regard, I also tried to migrate from my trusty Tony Lopez epppd.exe
packet driver to the smaller newer Ladsoft, LSPPP driver. I hate to be
a Ladsoft basher but I had a lot of problems, even after corresponding with
its author. If all goes well, your modems connect and LSPPP prints
messages like this:
LADSoft PPP Packet Driver Ver 0.75 Copyright (c) LADSoft
Connecting to network...Negotiating IP linkage...
Connection open
Installed packet driver handler at vector 0x60
Connection succesful
Im pretty sure these come from the driver, not the server or the modems because
no such messages ever happen with the same ISP and my epppd.exe driver.
All too frequently, however I get:
Connecting to network . . . Authenticating... Invalid password
Can't connect, driver not going resident
Connection successful
Needless to say the last line is confusing. I know I am in trouble when
the messages linger a while and I see that word ``Authenticating''.
Almost always the negotiation fails. Yet my username/password is always
the same, as are all the settings. If I try to connect a few seconds later,
I often get in. Again, this behaviour does not occur with the same ISP,
using epppd.
I also find LSPPP is prone to freeze my computer if a connection does not
succeed, or if some internet application exits abnormally. With epppd all
that happens is I get back to my functional dos prompt. With LSPPP only
a hard reboot restores functionality.
Returning to the epppd driver solves all of these problems. Now there
are many many settings provided by LSPPP, and there are complex relationships
possible between one's ISP, the PPP negotiations, and the particular packet
driver. So I am reluctant to assign these problems to LSPPP, per se. Again
though, you might simply switch ``back'' to epppd.exe, to see if it solves
some new modem enigmas.
Hope some of this helps some modem sufferers out there.
