Sony did indeed offer a data storage system using Minidiscs; they were a different grade disc, I think (not sure if that was important), and there was a portable recorder which could be hooked up to a PC IIRC. Because Minidiscs hold compressed (ATRAC -- kinda like MP3) audio, there's only about 250MB data space compared to a CD's 600+.
