An updated version 4.52 of ReRead is now available, at its homepage:
www.inti.be/hammer/download.htm ==> rread45x.zip (ca. 107 KB)
It is _not_ uploaded to the (highjacked, commercialised) SimTel any more.
The updated manual is available as a separate text there,
www.inti.be/hammer/download.htm ==> rrkeys45.htm
It gives a concise overview of the program - and please have a look at
it, as quite a number of things (including keybindings) have changed.
Foremost new addition is a search function not only through a mail
item buth through the index and even the whole mail folder. It allows
to grab a line from display and edit it too, for this purpose.
Indexing was largely improved here and in foregoing versions 4+, e.g.
re-indexing or updating the index of a mail folder with newly added
items; and the "URL-grabber" facility is now integrated: grab/edit a WWW
source address from any text file, and launch an HTTP client (like HTGET
or a LYNX) to get it; its URL edit-on-the-fly has been improved.
There are some new tags added to the configuration file (a template is
joined with the program file) for permanent settings, and saving the
settings to a cfg.file can be done from inside the program as well.
ReRead v4.5+ still does digest "file series" - sequences of single-mail
files - but the somewhat dangerously to use rebuilding of folders from
them has been suspended (though it does index them correctly.) It's more
versatile to use the external NM2BAG.exe (Netmail-to-mailbag) program
for this purpose; it's available at the ReRead website.
And I hope I chased most of those ugly little bugs which dared still
to hide in some corners, <ug> - well, as far as I could see after two
weeks of intensive, allround use.
Still not integrated - and I doubt if ever - is sorting; I use an
external pre-sorter (SORTMAIL by Martin Goebbel, available at the
ReRead download page) which does most of what's needed, including
full-text search, and can be much better fine-tuned than what an
internal functionality would deliver; with too much enlarging the
program's footprint.
Short recap:
------------
ReRead is done strictly for the DOS Text Mode standard and uses only
DOS BIOS I/O functions, thus is speech/Braille friendly, and needs
only small memory resources. It can handle quite large mailbags as
well as large single items in them.
ReRead is an offline reader for all types of downloaded mail/news
folders, for instance the MAIL.DLU type of Nettamer download mail/news
files, or of other mailers which store items the items consecutively as
downloaded (Netscape "folders" e.a.). It can expand digests contained
in single mail items too.
And it is a general text file lister, with lots of hook-ins, e.g. for
editors and HTML-decoders.
Basic file handling functions allow to use it as a shell for general DOS
tasks, with ergonomical ways for "household" tasks.
The functional core of ReRead is a comfortable copy/paste (or print)
functionality with flexible target filename buffers, easy switching
between targets/sources, and drives and directory tree navigating,
hot-key invocation of editors and decoders to be hooked-in, etc.
