Got the two programs you mentioned. Thanks. It will
certainly help me to find out what is wrong where.
Need though a little more help.
When I printed the alphabet in small characters the first
thing I found that the printer did not proceeded with the
printout. Do not know what command did not come through.
The paper was taken up by the printer (HP deskyet 500c) but
printing did not start. Pressing the eject button of the
printer gave a print out of the 26 characters but lots of
them where not correct.
As I had some troubles to get the binaries of the characters
I am stuck.
The intended print: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
was shown as efgdefglmnolmnotuvwtuvw|}~
                    xxx xxxx xxxx xxx

As I used a quit direct cable from the computer to the
printer I would assume that the problems are at my card or
in the printer port.
How can I find that out. I know that the environment in
which I work with my computer is not ideal. High humidity
and high temperatures will certainly affect the pins of
connectors. To check and clean 25 pins (external and
internal) is something I do not want to start if I do not
know where exactly the problem can be found. I you could
tell me which bit(s) are missing, is it than possible to
tell which of the 25 pins is the problem (corroded/damaged)?
And why is my problem intermittent?

Dear Garry,
Thanks for the instructions and the informative
explanation. Now a lot of what has happening is much
clearer. For some time I bought a plug with 9 green and
nine red leds which would show malfunctions from/in the
printer cable. I was never able to find out how it worked
and having had no problems up to now I never used it.
Now I have put it in use and see an irregular pattern
emerging. Sometimes it is all green with one missing which
is than red. Sometimes I have two or three red dots. After
I have found out with your instructions what is broken I
may make sense out of those patterns ;-).
My first work will be to try to print your instructions ;-)
