Actually there is something very close: the windows version of
Pcpine -- I believe all version numbered 4x. Pcpine is described as
a console application with ``not a true or complete windows interface''.
It is designed to create a dos text box to run in, but the text box
includes substantial mouse support, text versions of the usual gui looking
menus at the top of the screen, etc.

I would like to know more specifically what windows is doing when it
emulates a dos ``machine'' an impliments options such as ``suggest dos
as needed'' or ``hide windows from applications''. What dos programs
will run in what kinds of boxes probably has more to do with these
emulation details than the sheer amount of ram available to dos, which
as you point out is usually huge, given our new 128megs standard, and
the traditional tiny amounts of ram needed for dos program.
