The link below is a very good rundown of how to optimize a RedHat system
running a 2.4 kernel system on older hardware by none other than Alan
Cox. In it, he describes a number of ways to get a 486/33 with 24MB of
RAM working well, even WITH a GUI.

Note that some of the tips are straightforward, while others require a
fair amount of technical prowess. It's not mean as a detailed howto or
handhold for beginners, but well worth it for anyone determined to let
their older hardware work at it's best. It contains software and
library recommendations, kernel configuration tips, ISA/MCA hardware
selection recommendations and a wealth of other information.

Much of the information makes good sense even for those with newer
hardware.
