Dear List:

I recently had to re-install Redhat and ran into some
problems with getting the install program to work. I finally
managed to boot it from the "A:" drive using a boot floppy,
but I had to read up a lot on it and using an app called
SYSLINUX. I tried other things, such as using various
files including a gzipped *.IMG kernel file, and also
making a boot floppy and using LOADLIN. Both failed until
I found my original way using syslinux to create a boot
floppy and writing a batch file to start the floppy "boot".
I was grateful I got it to work. Many thanks to Steve
{[EMAIL PROTECTED]} and some others at info on how to install
Linux.

I would like to try out some other Linuxes, when I get
the time and hardware working to do so. Mainly, this 4/66
is just too underpowered to run X and Netscape, except maybe
it will work over a network cable, as Steven Darnold on
his homepage talks about. I just prefer the more "mainline"
Redhat, but the problem with it is, although there are some
advantages, it uses "dependencies". In other words, if you
mess up and install the wrong RPM "packages", then you are
stuck. Unless you are really a good Linux programmer, you will
have to re-install.

Mainly the idea I had was to try to do many if not most
things in Linux, but I have run into some problems with Word 97
files and so forth. Does anybody know where I could get more
help with installing ANTIWORD? This maybe sounds funny, but I
actually downloaded and tried to setup the GNU GCC compiler on
this little machine. Even if it doesn't work, I will feel like
I gave it a try. It might be hard to do some things using Linux
only but I want to try to find a solution for some things before
installing Windows {not Windoze} apps instead. Well, enough of
my rambling. Write me or the List if you have any questions
about this stuff.

yours,

Tom/Thomas/or just plain-old "you-who" if you wish...
