Dear Gary.
Same with me. As my wife does not allow to change anything
on her computer, not even the colors of her cga screen, I
still have not found out how the Seagate ST-225 is started.
I have no idea how the setup could be looked at, but if the
full count is done, search is done on the A disk and then
the C where I have the autoexec.bat and confi.sys.
It seems that with an imcomplete count this mechanisme is
interrupted. Thought that the floppy disk was corrupted but
at the umpteens time trying to boot via the A drive it
finaly came to life and functions properly.
If only the boot via the C drive would work again.

  Normally, when an old computer bailed out to Basic, it was
  because it didn't sense the presence of an operating
  system (DOS, of course). Don't know how that relates to an
  apparent memory problem in your XT, though. Gary
