Where did you specify them?  Did you edit the config files
directly or run pppsetup or what?

Sounds like an authentication problem.  I notice that
you did not mention specifying username and password.
Did you do them?

If your system is running syslogd, you may have some
useful information in /var/log/messages about the
pppd attempt.
