Further speed tests. I actually ran essentially (some of) the same tests,
only this time on my 486 DX2 66 with 20MB RAM (30 pin SIMMs). The
partition on which I did the tests has Vectorlinux 2.0 on it, which comes
with the 2.4.5 kernel. I replaced that kernel with the 2.2.16 kernel that
is on my Slack71 partition on the same machine. I realize I should be
conducting these tests on the Slack71 partition, but that partition
remains unbootable since, for some reason, the integrity check hangs at
70.3% and will proceed no further. I can't take time to troubleshoot that
problem right now, and I'm not even sure where to start. I've never seen
such a thing in my short but intense Linux comuting career.

Test results:

Test 1: open the program, with only naim open in the background, as well
as an xterm connected to the ISP. Abiword takes 60 seconds to fully load
on this machine. Ted takes 20 seconds to fully load.

Test 2: with the program loaded, open a short (2 pg, single-spaced) rtf
with pretty standard formatting (some centering, an italicized word,
underlined phrase, document fully justified). Abiword takes 65 seconds to
open the document. Ted takes 42 seconds.

Hopefully I'll be able to do some more testing tomorrow, and wil post
results.

James
