Interesting article. I noticed this line:

"[...] The only stumbling block to offering such a bundle is that
Microsoft's XP is (currently) nearly as costly as the hardware to run it
on. "

And presumably, that's the "home" version!

I'm encouraged by the progress being made getting Linux to run on a
variety of hardware these days. Although a variety of Win-only hardware
seems to be the norm, I have been able to get most of the features of my
new (new job!) laptop to work under Linux fairly well. A $200 PC that
does NOT lock me into any particular vendor's software would be great.

I know the challenge for some folks on this list is NOT having a
walmart/best-buy store nearby (or even in-country). It's great that
hardware is getting to be so cheap (and capable) but there are still
lots of folks who want to be "connected" who don't have ready access to
the "latest greatest" stuff. I try to follow the development of low-cost
systems (i.e. Simputer) that are trying to hit that same price-point
($200US) for capable systems to do stuff OTHER than run the latest games
or video editing.
