Nonsense...you can run Windows 3.1 on one partition up to 528 megs...
as for putting the swap file on seperate partition, since he has already
mentioned using DriveSpace, he must remember that it is best to not
use a compressed drive for swap file. Another thing...typically, Win3X
is setup to run with "permament" swap file...works better. This is in
contrast to Win9X, which works better letting Win9X control the size of
the swap file. For Win3X, it is recommended to use a swap file of about
1 and 1/2 to 2 times the amount of installed RAM, setup as a permament
swap file, on the fastest non-compressed hard drive available. As example,
let's say his machine has 8 meg RAM...he installs a second hard drive, and
after re-assigning drive letters, has C: and D: for hard drives. For sake of
convenience, the second drive is also IDE...anyway...his C: drive is already
compressed...drive H is the "host" for it...he can install Windows 3.1 to drive D:,
leave it uncompressed and setup a swap file of 12 to 16 megabytes, as a
permament type. This is done in the Virtual Memory setting applet of Control
Panel. I would also mention that I have ran Windows 3.1 for years without a
single problem on a compressed hard drive...I saved back enough room on
the "host" drive for my swap file, as well as a few other things. As long as you
maintain the system, as far as keeping the drives defragmented, checking
with ScanDisk or Disk Doctor for lost clusters, you can use Win3X for as long
as you desire on a compressed hard disk.
I am running Windows 3.1 on an MS DOS 6.22 computer, a 170 meg HD, which
has been compressed with DriveSpace. It is a 486DX2, 66 mHz, has 16 meg
RAM. My swap file is 32 meg, in the uncompressed part of the host drive (H:).
This old computer has been running this way for over 3 years, ever since I
rebuilt it after the previous hard drive crashed on the previous owner...it was
running Win95 at the time.
Windows 3.1 does not require 100 or more meg hard drive space for swap file.
It also does not require it to be on a seperate "VM"...virtual machine???
