The older versions of pine (I believe pre-4.0) didn't fiddle with the
headers/mail files on the unix system. Thus, you could use pine (3.96 or
earlier) for unix reading, and your dos app for dos reading. You'll need
to check on the version of pine that started modifying the mail files to
be sure, but I think this could work.
The other thing is the mail program. It doesn't have nice features like
pine, but it definitely only reads the mail file, and doesn't try to do
anything with it. Unfortunately, it's a bit hard to use mail as a general
mail client because of it's lack of features. I do use it when I need
something in a hurry and don't feel like waiting or seeing what the client
wants me to see, mail shows everything just as it is. Perhaps you could
write some scripts using mail to do what you want.
