<DIV></DIV>&gt;I finally succeeded in installing Win2000 on my pc PIII .&nbsp;&nbsp;
It only took
<DIV></DIV>&gt;me many months to work up courage....and get my hard drives backed up.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;here are my questions. i looked these all up in my Win2000 Secrets book
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;- but did not find a good answer.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;1.&nbsp;&nbsp;I am logged in as administrator now.&nbsp;&nbsp;I have
not set up any 'users'.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp; I plan to set things up for three users.&nbsp;&nbsp;ONE =
myself.&nbsp;&nbsp; my question
<DIV></DIV>&gt;is this.&nbsp;&nbsp;can i set myself up as userONE and have NO
password?&nbsp;&nbsp;I am sure
<DIV></DIV>&gt;i could , and would probably try it...but do not want to risk screwing
up.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;2. When Win2000 boots up the startup screen asks me what what i want to
<DIV></DIV>&gt;use Win2000 or 98.&nbsp;&nbsp;How can i change this?
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;3. Win3.1 used to have windows' recorder for making
macros.&nbsp;&nbsp;I&nbsp;&nbsp;used to
<DIV></DIV>&gt;use Quickeys for win98.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;I want to
<DIV></DIV>&gt;-change some keyboard keys - there is directions how to do this in
<DIV></DIV>&gt;WIN2000 secrets.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;-make hotkeys
<DIV></DIV>&gt;-have automatic typing&nbsp;&nbsp;a la TypeIt4Me for the mac.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;ok ok i could get upgrade to QK....but it is v pricey IMHO so i thought
i
<DIV></DIV>&gt;would ask around.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Thanks for all the good tips lately...and the&nbsp;&nbsp;lisc stuff for
MS.&nbsp;&nbsp; I
<DIV></DIV>&gt;passed that onto my edtech email list.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Sure, just create the new user (Control Panel -&gt; Users and
Passwords) and
<DIV></DIV>&gt;(optionally) set the password not to expire (from Users and Passwords,
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Advanced tab, Advanced button, Users folder, right click on the user
and hit
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Properties, there's a tickbox "Password never
expires").&nbsp;&nbsp;It'll be an empty
<DIV></DIV>&gt;password unless you change it.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;

<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; use Win2000 or 98.&nbsp;&nbsp;How can i change this?
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;As Administrator, Control Panel -&gt; System (or just hit
Windows-Break), then
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Advanced -&gt; Startup and Recovery... and there are options
there.&nbsp;&nbsp;These modify
<DIV></DIV>&gt;the settings in the BOOT.INI file, but using that dialog box is best
unless
<DIV></DIV>&gt;you know what you're doing.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;I'm afraid I have no ideas on the macro/typing front, I haven't used
anything
<DIV></DIV>&gt;like that for Windows.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; I have the imression (but I'm not sure, unable to produce a
positive
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; proof) that Windows installs not only a MBR and related things at
the
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; beginning of the HD, and these are in a way protected against
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; overwriting.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;If they're protected, that's only within Windows; LOCK C: might
override that
<DIV></DIV>&gt;protection, or might not.&nbsp;&nbsp;Outside of Windows (DOS or any
other OS) they'll be
<DIV></DIV>&gt;open for overwriting.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; But there is a smaller region at the very _end_ of the
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; HD's range which seems to be occupied by "secret" Windows files
too.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Hmm, I haven't noticed anything like that.&nbsp;&nbsp;Win3.1's swap
file used to live at
<DIV></DIV>&gt;the end of the disk, about the 4/5ths mark or
thereabout.&nbsp;&nbsp;Certainly there's
<DIV></DIV>&gt;nothing in the partition, since Partition Magic can shrink partitions
(which
<DIV></DIV>&gt;would lose that data); I haven't noticed anything at the end of the disk
<DIV></DIV>&gt;itself either since I can create partitions right up to the last
cylinder
<DIV></DIV>&gt;without affecting Windows.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;I suspect it's some sort of recovery partition or BIOS stuff specific
to the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;machine(s) in question; Compaqs used to have that, and my Dell laptop
has
<DIV></DIV>&gt;something in a recovery partition that I've never had time to
investigate
<DIV></DIV>&gt;properly.&nbsp;&nbsp;A BIOS might try and stop you deleting that data,
but anything that
<DIV></DIV>&gt;talks to the disk controller directly (so pretty much any modern OS)
ought to
<DIV></DIV>&gt;bypass that.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;

<DIV></DIV>&gt;Ben A L Jemmett.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;An instructive exchange I copied from another list follows for the
benefit
<DIV></DIV>&gt;of those who may be considering buying themselves a
router.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don't buy a
<DIV></DIV>&gt;Belkin.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; Hi All
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; For a week or so now I have been starting up my laptop in
the office and
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; receiving a immediate pop-up spam add.
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; Havinf all filters turned on including security, popups and
cookies I was
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; going nuts trying to figure out how I had became infected
with a url
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; transfer spam program in my Linux box.
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; Thanks to a posting on another list I was able to ascertain
that what is
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; happening is that a router company has initiated an add
campain of popups
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; through their routers.
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; The URL that always appears is:
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
http://filter.belkin.com/setup.asp?SN=BEL13KK0&amp;RP=21456&amp;IP=192.168.0.2&amp;FV=2
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;.00.04
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; which is a Belkin Router add.
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; The following story explains the situation:
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/11/07/1740205&amp;tid=153
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; My solution to this issue is to post notices on all know BB
that if you buy
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; Belkin products expects spam from Belkin.
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; that is a *horrifying* story.&nbsp;&nbsp;i'll certainly join
you in boycotting
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; belkin products while they maintain such a heinous policy and
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; unapologetic tone.&nbsp;&nbsp;the mind boggles when you
consider that the maker
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; of a NIC chip could do something similar, or a video card
maker could
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; paint pop-up ads right into the frame buffer, a keyboard
maker could
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; make the keyboard change "http:..." strings to other URLs.
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; i think the ghastliest line was that "The router would grab
a random HTTP
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; connection every eight hours and redirect it to Belkin's
(push) advertised
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; web page."&nbsp;&nbsp;you would really begin to suspect your
devices were consipiring
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; against you--and in this case, you'd be right!!
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; the following&nbsp;&nbsp;page has more info, including
belkin's weak response:
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; http://www.marco.org/content/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=36
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; just do a google search on "boycott belkin"
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt; &gt; &gt; thanks for sharing, frank
