<DIV></DIV>>I finally succeeded in installing Win2000 on my pc PIII .
It only took
<DIV></DIV>>me many months to work up courage....and get my hard drives backed up.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>here are my questions. i looked these all up in my Win2000 Secrets book
<DIV></DIV>> - but did not find a good answer.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>1. I am logged in as administrator now. I have
not set up any 'users'.
<DIV></DIV>> I plan to set things up for three users. ONE =
myself. my question
<DIV></DIV>>is this. can i set myself up as userONE and have NO
password? I am sure
<DIV></DIV>>i could , and would probably try it...but do not want to risk screwing
up.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>2. When Win2000 boots up the startup screen asks me what what i want to
<DIV></DIV>>use Win2000 or 98. How can i change this?
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>3. Win3.1 used to have windows' recorder for making
macros. I used to
<DIV></DIV>>use Quickeys for win98.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>I want to
<DIV></DIV>>-change some keyboard keys - there is directions how to do this in
<DIV></DIV>>WIN2000 secrets.
<DIV></DIV>>-make hotkeys
<DIV></DIV>>-have automatic typing a la TypeIt4Me for the mac.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>ok ok i could get upgrade to QK....but it is v pricey IMHO so i thought
i
<DIV></DIV>>would ask around.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Thanks for all the good tips lately...and the lisc stuff for
MS. I
<DIV></DIV>>passed that onto my edtech email list.

<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Sure, just create the new user (Control Panel -> Users and
Passwords) and
<DIV></DIV>>(optionally) set the password not to expire (from Users and Passwords,
<DIV></DIV>>Advanced tab, Advanced button, Users folder, right click on the user
and hit
<DIV></DIV>>Properties, there's a tickbox "Password never
expires"). It'll be an empty
<DIV></DIV>>password unless you change it.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>> > 2. When Win2000 boots up the startup screen asks me what what i
want to
<DIV></DIV>> > use Win2000 or 98. How can i change this?
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>As Administrator, Control Panel -> System (or just hit
Windows-Break), then
<DIV></DIV>>Advanced -> Startup and Recovery... and there are options
there. These modify
<DIV></DIV>>the settings in the BOOT.INI file, but using that dialog box is best
unless
<DIV></DIV>>you know what you're doing.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>I'm afraid I have no ideas on the macro/typing front, I haven't used
anything
<DIV></DIV>>like that for Windows.

<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>If they're protected, that's only within Windows; LOCK C: might
override that
<DIV></DIV>>protection, or might not. Outside of Windows (DOS or any
other OS) they'll be
<DIV></DIV>>open for overwriting.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>> > But there is a smaller region at the very _end_ of the
<DIV></DIV>> > HD's range which seems to be occupied by "secret" Windows files

<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Hmm, I haven't noticed anything like that. Win3.1's swap
file used to live at
<DIV></DIV>>the end of the disk, about the 4/5ths mark or
thereabout. Certainly there's
<DIV></DIV>>nothing in the partition, since Partition Magic can shrink partitions
(which
<DIV></DIV>>would lose that data); I haven't noticed anything at the end of the disk
<DIV></DIV>>itself either since I can create partitions right up to the last
cylinder
<DIV></DIV>>without affecting Windows.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>I suspect it's some sort of recovery partition or BIOS stuff specific
to the
<DIV></DIV>>machine(s) in question; Compaqs used to have that, and my Dell laptop
has
<DIV></DIV>>something in a recovery partition that I've never had time to
investigate
<DIV></DIV>>properly. A BIOS might try and stop you deleting that data,
but anything that
<DIV></DIV>>talks to the disk controller directly (so pretty much any modern OS)
ought to
<DIV></DIV>>bypass that.
<DIV></DIV>>
