Type 'route' and see what address is assigned to default. In one
instance I found that my ethernet card was assigned the default route
and would not release it short of doing a route -del default which
deletes the default route and allows it to be reassigned. May be similar
to what you are experiencing, unfortanately, you didn't state whether
you had and ethernet card in your system as well as a modem so I'm
making an assumption which the command 'route' will confirm.
