Actually, the PATTERN I was using was simply the pathname of the
file I wanted to exclude, which should fit your definition. No?

I've come to the conclusion that tar won't use --exclude at all
if the list of files comes from a file, but only if you specify
files from a directory tree.  I suppose it thinks if you've gone
to the trouble to create a file of pathnames, you can edit it
yourself to exclude those you don't want.  So that's what I now do.
