Gnome is a desktop environment ( application suite ) , WindowMaker is a
windowmanager. You can run gnome with any # of different windowmanagers. I
choose to run it with E and esd. WindowMaker is not built on top of Gnome,
in the sense that Gnome is not a depency requirement. The actual desktop
environment associated with WindowMaker is GNUstep, for which I'm told it
will be the native windowmanager, as much as I suspect the primary
windowmanagers associated most with Gnome, will probably wind up being E.
