i have to agree whole heartedly on this. I am from the Win 3.x , 95,
98 NT world and have recently converted to Linux. I bought a copy of
redhat and of SuSE. Red Hat disappointed me. Cheesy manual and all. It
may be more closer to the leading edge of Linux than SuSE but I have
found SuSE to be easier to set up, (I got it "right" the first time
too :) ). I am not trying to start some holy war. Redhat may be great
but it is not for me.
SuSE's manual is chock full of good stuff that you can actually use.
The suse mailing list is a great source of information and help. And
lastly, the "SuSE community" seems a whole lot nicer.
Granted , I am no genius-ass Linux person. Far from it! But I am
having a good time getting things working. You will still need to read
a lot (and then a lot more too) but it is not as intimidating as I
thought.
KDE is nice as a desktop enviroment. Some of the window managers I
have tried out are pretty neat too. The SuSE Office 99 suite took all
my windows document files and converted them nicely (although not
automatically, but still no big deal). I got networking going after 2
half days of reading/working on the box. Now I can do the same in
under an hour. So it does get easier with practice.
I consider myself to have made an informed decision by checking out
both distro's. I highly recommend SuSE over RedHat for the "New Guy".
