Get leafnode. I think you'll like it, especially judging from your
foundness for fetchmail cronjobs etc. as it works similar. Leafnode acts
like a newserver on your machine, and is really easy to set up, fast, and
small. You can use it to grab news periodically and read them offline with
pine, slrn, tin, netscape---i.e., your client of choice.
