Never! USe the /sbin/init.d/rcx.d/S20diald scirpt (or the relative to link)

Im not so sure but... have you checked for permission missunderstood ?

This kind of problem don't seem to affect diald but the routing table which is
statically write to /etc/route.conf, you should check for some enviroment
variables cause the latest "$" seem to point anywhere, and of course...
permissions :)
