What card do you have? I had this problem with an S3 ViRGE using the SVGA
server with 24 bpp. I solved the problem reading the README file for my card in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc which says (around line 39):
"You should find that the VIRGE server is stable at all depths. The server
supports 1 and 32 bpp pixmap formats. This fixes known problems with xanim and
Netscape clients in early versions of the S3V server. "
and then using the S3V server instead of the SVGA server.
