So, what problems did you have, and what did you do? Being new to the list,
I went through the archive for December and this month, but only saw one
message from you regarding MASQ, and no replies.
I've set up an internal LAN, which will ultimately consist of six machines,
most running WIN95. I have SuSE 5.3 on one box, which I want to use with ip
masquerading. For security, I also want to set up firewalling.
Cable service is from Mediaone. They put the card in a WIN95/OS2 dual boot
machine. I plan to transfer the card permanently to the Linux box, set up
ip masq & firewall, and set all the other computers up to access the
internet through the Linux box. Standard stuff.
Since I have impatient users here who like to spend a lot of time web
surfing, I only get to do developmental work on weekends. Last weekend, I
had the two NICs in the Linux box, and was able to get onto the Internet.
But from a WIN95 machine in another room, I can ping both of the NICs in the
Linux box (that is, 198.168.10.1, and 24.128.xxx.xx, whatever Mediaone has
assigned to their NIC. But that's as far as I get. I have the DNS in WIN95
set up so that the gateway is given as 198.168.10.1, and I had DNS on, with
the DNS's for my Mediaone node listed (24.128.60.7, 24.128.60.8, and one
other).
I'm not at home right now, so I can't look up detailed info on any of the
*.conf files or anything. I do have FW_START=on, and FW_DEV=eth0 (which is
the LAN-side NIC). The firewall network is identified as 198.168.10.0/24.
Any help would be appreciated, although I can understand if there isn't
enough information in this message at this point to suggest any possible
fixes. I just wanted to get rolling with this. Another weekend is coming
up, and I know I'm right on the verge of a breakthrough.
I've read the minii-HOWTOs, and as an aside, I have to say that not even the
ETHERNET HOWTO was helpful in getting SuSE to recognize Mediaone's 3Com NIC
(a 3C509-letter something). I figured out accidentally that the only
setting I needed to provide was the IRQ. Nothing in any of the documents
provided that information.
