Hi folks

I hope you can help me. I an trying to get my Epson printer to work with
Linux and am getting nowhere too quickly!

The story so far:

I just bought an Epson Stylus Color 740 printer today after checking
with the SuSE Hardware Database that is would work with Linux. I
downloaded the latest version of Ghost Script (v 5.50) from the SuSE FTP
site. I also downloaded the newest apsfilter from the FTP site as well.
I proceeded to install the following rpms using YaST;

        aps-1.5.SuSE-0.i386.rpm
        gs_both-5.50-0.i386.rpm
        gs_fonts-5.50-0.i386.rpm
        gs_lib-5.50-0.i386.rpm

I also printed out the SuSE Support Database Document "Printer Check
List" (vai Winedoz98) and set about installing my printer. The steps
carried out are as follows;

I started by logging in as SU and then by running
'/usr/lib/apsfilter/SETUP' and I installed the uniprint driver as
follows;
        1) Which Device Interface : PARALLEL and '/dev/lp1'
        2) Which Printer Driver : FREEDEF, YOUR, 'uniprint', '720'
        3)      Which Paper Type        : a4
        4)      Monochrom/Colorfull     : COLOR
        5) Settings For You Printer: I left it at default values.
        6)      Add the printer definition.

The resultant output is as follows;

 Printer
entry:
  ### uniprint a4 color 720
###
 ascii|lp1|uniprint-a4-ascii-mono-720|uniprint a4 ascii mono
720
 lp|lp2|uniprint-a4-auto-color-720|uniprint a4 auto color
720
 lp-mono|lp3|uniprint-a4-auto-mono-720|uniprint a4 auto mono
720
 raw|lp4|uniprint-a4-raw|uniprint a4 raw

After exiting the SETUP program, the next thing I did was at the command
prompt typed;
        cat StartLog > /dev/lp1

This caused the file to be printed but the page was not ejected. I had
to manually do that. The resultant output was that of a portrait print
out of the file.

I next exited out of SU and tried printing a test text doc by using the
print function within TkDesk to print out a one line text file. This
worked file except that the file was printed out in landscape, two pages
to a sheet.

I next tried to print a 448 byte file. This too was a text document but
the print speed was appallingly slow!!

I next went back to being a SU and tried to print it from there as
follows;
         cat test_doc.txt > /dev/lp1
The printer made some gurgling noises and the power light is flashing
but no paper has been sucked in nor it is printing.

I am at my wits end on how to solve this problem.

I would greatly appricate any and all help on this matter.

Regards

Raja
