True on all counts. The ftape code that comes with the kernel sources is
old and buggy. I was under the impression that Claus' code was about to go
into the kernel tree RSN, but it hasn't happened yet.

Go to Claus' ftape page and get the latest version. Read the INSTALL file
carefully and follow the instructions to build ftape as modules. You MIGHT
run into the modversions problem and have to recompile your kernel, but
probably not.

I managed to stuff the 3.04d ftape code into the 2.0.33 source tree and
build a kernel with ftape compiled in using the diffs on Claus's
development page, but it took some fiddling to make it work. From around
3.04something on, ftape builds as modules with very little fuss and works
quite well.
