I use :
xterm -font 9x15bold (some other cmd line stuff for color, geometry, etc).
If you don't have any other X-Fonts installed, that's why you can't use
them.
You can look in '/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias' for a list of
fonts that can be used from the command line.
