Yeah. The GNOME list has had a share of issues with programs. I have
to say here though the 1.0.1 release of rpm's built has been quite
stable. I have left the system running since downloading and applying
the rpm upgrades. As I mentioned, only gedit, balsa, and gmc wouldnot
work but that was not the fault of the 1.0.1 release.
ImO, GNOME 1.0.1 is ready for primetime overall. Perhaps we will see
various pieces upgraded and refined. I think GNOME is an evolving
thing. The 1.0.1 release marks a change in a few areas. Now if there
could be some integrated approach to the packages for installation and
support, it would be great.
Moreover, I feel compelled to mention that SuSE needs to actively
consider producing a package management and administration suite which
will allow us the freedom of using either rpms or tarballs. I use
tarballs usually; but wimped last nite and got the rpms. The thought
of compiling 20 or 30 programs was rather daunting to me last nite.
Some interesting things re: gnome. The application set is still
evolving. There are new applications or ones not in the 99.88 release.
There is a graphical ppp dialing program. The program seems much more
responsive to menu calls and program selections. There were problems
with the gmc file manager and I think there still may be some. The
display though is quite nice and it has decent management tools. I
have not seen gnumeric (spreadsheet) but intend on doing so. A few of
the best of breed apps would be for me:
xchat
gedit
calender
gnomecard
all the great games!!
I cannot rate balsa at this level because I had overall display
problems with the program on both a laptop and desktop. A few others
that seem pretty cool are the level of configurability of the panel
itself. I think a tough, but improving, area is the integration of
gnome and window managers. I personally like windowmaker but others
choose englightenment.
Tools that manage the GNOME installation are quite well done also ImO.
