Check in the file /etc/ppp/options for the word "lock". If it is not commented
out, do so. Otherwise pppd tries to get a hold of the modemdevice. As kppp has
already done so, pppd thinks it can't do its things, give you the message "PPP
daemon died unexpectedly", and dies.

This happened to me today after uppgrading from SUSE 5.3 to 6.0.
