Well I bet you the winmodem is the problem. I would remove it, and try again.
I had a winmodem once, and it locked up all my serial ports. Remove it.
If you use a ps2 mouse on irq12, you should have no problem there.
The serial ports in your bios are what I was talking about. Make sure that
you don't assign them an irq that your internal modem needs.
If I was you, I would pull the winmodem out, and put your 56k internal
on com1. Then you would have a working v90 modem for both windows and
linux on com1. Remember to change /etc/isapnp.conf for the 56k.
Didn't the winmodem give you a crazy listing in /etc/isapnp.conf?
You did try to edit your isapnp.conf file didn't you?
Sell that winmodem to some windows newbie. :-)
