I liike external modems because the lights tell me what's happening - in
particular, if data is moving, and more or less at what rate.  Also, if something
is being transmitted that I really want to stop in a hurry, I can just flip the
power switch ont he modem.

I've often wished that someone would manufacture an internal modem with a little
jack at the back where  you could plug in a cable connecting to a small box of
LEDs that showed the modem's state - in effect, providing external indicators for
an internal modem.  I know there are some comm programs that provide simulated
rd/sd lights, but I've never even heard of an application for Linux *or* Windows
that just displays the modem lights in a corner of your screen no matter what
communications program you're using.
