Some times message digests (big files with lots of messages to be
processed) have a bad header or are not processable by the mail software
and they get marked bad. Then someone comes along, fixes it and the mail
program processes the file. Presto, old email messages.
I don't know if this is what is happening to you, but this happens where I
work all the time where we host email services for large companies
(including the one I know you all hate :-)). The difference is, when our
customers pay for email, it's millions. So it gets fixed *now*.
